Advance – Find Your Purpose

Make a Choice. Take a Chance. Create a Change.

Advance helps us determine how God created us to put your faith in action using the MBTI personality assessment, Gallup’s StrengthsFinder, the Enneagram, and the Character Matrix.

How do your preferences shape what may be your calling (MBTI)?
How do your strengths shape what may be your calling (Gallup StrengthsFinder)?
How do your underlying motivations shape what may be your calling (Enneagram)?
How do you grow to become a servant leader (Character Matrix)?

Discovering your uniqueness can help you discover your purpose.

  • What are areas of need you see around you that you sense need to be met?
  • How can you meet those needs?
  • What does God want you to do for the world?
  • How did God create you to love Him and love people?

Questions to Help You Discover Your Purpose

When in your life have you felt most alive?
In what areas of your life have you been affirmed for your efforts?
In what ways do you like to serve others?
In what areas are you currently serving out of passion?
In what areas are you currently serving out of obligation? If you were passionate about this area in the past, what changed in you or the situation?
How do your preferences shape what may be your calling (MBTI)?
How do your strengths shape what may be your calling (Gallup StrengthsFinder)?
How do your underlying motivations shape what may be your calling (Enneagram)?
Do you have personal core values? If so, what are they?
If not, consider Michael Warden’s definition of a value and come up with your top 5.  “A value is any context, quality or way of engaging with life that fills you up, gets your blood going, and nourishes your soul. Essentially, a value can be anything that makes your heart come alive.”
Do you have a personal mission statement?
If so, evaluate on a scale from 0 to 10 how well you are doing at living out this statement?
If not, what do you think would be elements you could include in one?
How has God spoken to you through the Scriptures, through your church family, or through that still small voice inside about your purpose?
[You can tell God is speaking when your idea or thought is selfless, takes courage, and consistent with His character.]
What are areas of need you see around you that you sense need to be met?

What does God want you to do for the world?

This is different than what we want God to do for us. Give him all of your desires, and ask Him to give back to you what is His best.

Passages on Purpose

“Trust in the Lord and do good; dwell in the land and enjoy safe pasture. 4 Take delight in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart. 5 Commit your way to the Lord; trust in him and he will do this: 6 He will make your righteous reward shine like the dawn, your vindication like the noonday sun. 7 Be still before the Lord and wait patiently for him…” – Psalm 37:3-7a

3 Let love and faithfulness never leave you; bind them around your neck, write them on the tablet of your heart.
4 Then you will win favor and a good name in the sight of God and man.
5 Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding;
6 in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.
7 Do not be wise in your own eyes; fear the LORD and shun evil.
8 This will bring health to your body and nourishment to your bones.
9 Honor the LORD with your wealth, with the firstfruits of all your crops;
10 then your barns will be filled to overflowing, and your vats will brim over with new wine.
11 My son, do not despise the LORD’s discipline, and do not resent his rebuke,
12 because the LORD disciplines those he loves, as a father the son he delights in.
13 Blessed are those who find wisdom, those who gain understanding,
14 for she is more profitable than silver and yields better returns than gold. – Proverbs 3:3-14

“4 The word of the Lord came to me, saying, 5 “Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born I set you apart; I appointed you as a prophet to the nations.”6 “Alas, Sovereign Lord,” I said, “I do not know how to speak; I am too young.”

7 But the Lord said to me, “Do not say, ‘I am too young.’ You must go to everyone I send you to and say whatever I command you. 8 Do not be afraid of them, for I am with you and will rescue you,” declares the Lord.” – Jeremiah 1:4-8

“For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. 12 Then you will call on me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you. 13 You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart. 14 I will be found by you,” declares the Lord…” Jeremiah 29:11-14a

36 “Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law?”
37 Jesus replied: “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ 38 This is the first and greatest commandment. 39 And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ 40 All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.” – Matthew 22:36-40

8 For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God— 9 not by works, so that no one can boast. 10 For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do. – Ephesians 2:8-10
